Cisco Engineer, WPAFB

Job Summary: 

The Sr Network Engineer assists with a large-scale initiative Wright Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB), Ohio. You will implement, operate, and maintain three separate network environments on the Defense Research and Engineering Network (DREN) network for the Air Force Scientific Community.  Design and hands-on configuration of networks, networking components, virtual environments, and related items.


Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Recent experience supporting a robust DOD networking environment
  • Expert level Cisco routing and switching in enterprise level environments
  • FORTINET devices a plus and enterprise IP level tunneling
  • Expertise with switching, routing, configuration, programing hardware devices, etc.
  • Experience with Cisco equipment, Dells, VPNs and managed switching
  • Expert level with Cisco Firewalls, vulnerability assessments, intrusion detection of foreign entities
  • LINUX shop experience a plus
  • Understanding of Air Force Research Laboratories (AFRL), AF Policy and Compliance and Enterprise Level IT Service Standards a plus

Job Duties:

  • Install and support LANs, WANs, network segments, internet and intranet systems
  • Configure, install, build, and perform Level 2 and higher maintenance on firewalls and switches
  • Participate in build and implementation of DREN Intranet, Extranet, and Isolated environments
  • Analyze system faults, troubleshooting, and running diagnostics
  • Analyze packets and diagnosing issues in communications and protocols
  • Monitor performance and bandwidth and provide proactive solutions for improvement
  • Recommend and manage network security activities, policies and procedures
  • Participate in planning for hardware, software, storage, and network infrastructure
  • Develop and maintain all documentation supporting network/system security authorization packages 

Skills / Qualifications:

  • Experience configuring network devices (managed switches, VPN, firewalls, routers, etc.)
  • Proficient understanding of virtual LANs, Network Address Translation rules, 802.3ad bonding and routing
  • Experience with Cisco firewalls, Nexus switches, Dell and HP networking a plus
  • Some experience with security scanning products, Linux, Windows, and minor scripting
  • Understanding and experience with Storage Area Networks (SAN)
  • Experience applying DISA STIGs to operating environments
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Strong oral and written skills (ability to create checklists and support documentation)
  • Report status and communicate with team member on tasks and projects
  • Dedication to following and enforcing compliance with DOD and Air Force regulations

Education / Experience:

  • Minimum 10 years’ professional experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred, Associates degree or less acceptable with additional experience
  • Must possess one of the following: CompTIA Security+ or GIAC Security Essentials (GSEC) or ISC2 Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP)
  • An additional professional certification required (CCNA, CCNP, etc.)
  • US citizenship is mandatory
  • Must have a Department of Defense (DOD) Secret level clearance
